Sheet Metal/Air Conditioning Contractors'

The OSHA and SMACNA Alliance focuses on providing the organization's members
and others in the sheet metal and air conditioning construction contracting industries, including
small businesses, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help
protect employees' health and safety. The Alliance will particularly focus on motor vehicle safety,
fall protection and personal protective equipment with an emphasis on cuts and eye injuries, and
reducing and preventing exposure to amputation and welding hazards. The Alliance's goals include:
Outreach and communication:
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention
of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information
(e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and SMACNA's Web sites) to
employers and employees in the industry.
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's and SMACNA's conferences and events, such as the annual
SMACNA Convention and chapter meetings.
- Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding
SMACNA best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by SMACNA and
through OSHA- or SMACNA-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures
(or any other applicable forum).
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
- Convene or participate in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on sheet metal
and air conditioning and construction contracting industry issues such as motor vehicle safety,
fall protection and personal protective equipment and, amputation and welding hazards to help forge
innovative solutions in the workplace.

Activities and Events
- May 6-12, 2007: 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The Sheet
Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA) and a number of other
Alliance Program participants supported 2007 NAOSH Week; “All Modes of Transportation.” Sponsored
annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and
the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing
injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
- May 7, 2007: Representatives of SMACNA attended the NAOSH Week Kick-off event at the U.S.
Department of Labor. Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA; was the keynote
speaker and presented "The
Road to Safety" to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health
representatives.
- December 4-5, 2006: SMACNA Council of Chapter Representatives Meeting, South Beach, Florida.
- December 5, 2006: Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation
on the
OSHA Alliance Program.
Following his speech, Mr. Foulke signed the OSHA and SMACNA Alliance renewal agreement.
- October 8-12, 2006: SMACNA Annual Convention, Phoenix, Arizona. Representative from the Arizona
Division of Occupational Safety and Health and OSHA Region IX staffed the OSHA/SMACNA Alliance
exhibit booth during the conference.
