Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Child Labor Laws
prohibit teens younger than 18 from working in certain jobs that are considered hazardous. Teens younger than 18 may not work in or with identified Hazardous

If you are
14-15 years old: According to the FLSA, you may not cook (except at soda fountains, lunch counters, snack bars or cafeteria service
counters) bake, or work with machines such as food slicers, choppers, grinders or mixers. You may also not work in freezers and coolers.
16-17 years old: The FLSA
states that you may not work with machines that process meat including slicers, patty forming devices, and meat/bone cutters and electric knives
(HO 10). It
also states that you may not work with bakery assisting machines such as dough and batter mixers, bread dividers, rounding or molding machines, doughsheeters,
bread slicers or wrappers, and cake cutting machines (HO 10). For additional
information about this requirement, see
29 CFR 570.61, Occupations in the
operation of power-driven meat-processing machines and occupations involving
slaughtering, meat packing or processing, or rendering (Order 10).
Note: The Child Labor Laws in your state
may be more strict. Consult your state's labor department for more information.
