Youth Link Disclaimer

You have selected a link to information about work that may not be legal or safe for you to do. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Child Labor Laws prohibit teens younger than 18 from working in certain jobs that are considered hazardous. Teens younger than 18 years of age may not work in or with identified Hazardous Occupations (HO). Hazardous Occupations are listed by Hazardous Occupation Number 1-17. For example, in the Hospital eTool - Clinical Services-Physical Therapy Module, certain restrictions for youth include:

If you are

14-15 years old: You must have the proper training/license to work in most areas of patient clinical services. Check with the institution to see what kind of experience is necessary to work in these areas.

16-17 years old: The FLSA states that you are not to work in areas where the environment has greater than 10% of the maximum permissible concentration (PEL) recommended by the National Committee on Radiation Protection (HO 6). You are also not permitted to work in areas that may expose you to ionizing radiation greater than 0.5 rem per year. For additional information on this requirement, see 29 CFR 570.57. Exposure to radioactive substances and to ionizing radiations (Order 6).

Note: The Child Labor Laws in your state may be more strict. Consult your state's labor department for more information.
