Youth Link Disclaimer

You have selected a link to information about work that may not be legal or safe for you to do. The
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Child Labor Laws
prohibit teens younger than 18 from working in certain jobs that are considered hazardous. Teens younger than 18 may not work in or with identified Hazardous
Occupations (HO). Hazardous Occupations are listed by Hazardous Occupation Number 1-17. For example, in the Grocery Warehousing eTool,
certain restrictions for youth include:
|
If you are
14-15 years old: Under the FLSA you may not work in warehouses or in the storage of goods or products. Also,
you may not work in the loading or unloading of goods to and from trucks, railroad cars, or conveyers.
16-17 years old: The FLSA
states that you may not drive vehicles for delivery or route sales
(HO 2). For additional information on this requirement, see
29 CFR 570.52, Occupations of motor-vehicle driver and outside helper (Order
2). It is also unsafe for anyone under 18 years of age to
operate a forklift, under any circumstances.
Note: The Child Labor Laws in your state
may be more strict. Consult your state's labor department for more information.
