You have selected a link to information about work that may not be legal or safe for you to do. The
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Child Labor Laws
prohibit teens younger than 18 from working in certain jobs that are considered hazardous. Teens younger than 18
of age may not work in or with identified Hazardous
Occupations (HO). Hazardous Occupations are listed by Hazardous Occupation Number 1-17. For example, in the Baggage Handling eTool,
certain work restrictions for youth include:
|
If you are
14-15 years old: You may not be employed in jobs that involve transportation of persons or property by rail,
highway, air, on water, pipeline, or other means.
16-17 years old: You are allowed to work in baggage handling with some restrictions.
The FLSA states that you are not allowed to drive
vehicles used to transport luggage or property
(HO 2). For additional information on this requirement, see
29 CFR 570.52, Occupations
of motor-vehicle driver and outside helper (Order 2). The FLSA also
states that you are not allowed to operate lifting
machinery that might be used to hoist people or baggage (HO 7). For additional
information on this requirement, see
29 CFR 570.58, Occupations involved in the
operation of power-driven hoisting apparatus (Order 7).
Note: The
Child Labor Laws in your state
may be more strict. Consult your state's labor department for more information.
