Hazard Recognition

Many workers are unaware of the potential hazards in their work environment, which makes them more vulnerable to injury. The following references provide links to indices of chemical hazards associated with laboratories.
  • Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (NPG). National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Provides a source of general industrial hygiene information on several hundred chemicals and classes for workers, employers, and occupational health professionals.
  • Master Index of Occupational Health Guidelines for Chemical Hazards. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Summarizes pertinent information about the properties and hazards of many chemicals found in laboratories.
  • AIHA Laboratory Health & Safety Committee. American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), Environmental & Occupational Health & Safety Services (EOHSS). Provides resources to aid in prevention, identification and control of potential exposures to chemical, biological, ergonomic, ionizing and nonionizing radiation, and physical hazards in laboratories.
  • Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB). National Library of Medicine (NLM), TOXNET: Toxicology Data Network. HSDB is a toxicology data file that focuses on the toxicology of potentially hazardous chemicals. It is enhanced with information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas. All data are referenced and derived from a core set of books, government documents, technical reports and selected primary journal literature. HSDB is peer-reviewed by the Scientific Review Panel (SRP), a committee of experts in the major subject areas within the data bank's scope. HSDB is organized into individual chemical records, and contains over 5000 such records.
  • Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), 5th Edition. US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), (2007, February).
    • SECTION VIII-G: Toxin Agents. 119 KB PDF, 13 pages.
    • Appendix I: Guidelines for Work with Toxins of Biological Origin. 21 KB PDF, 5 pages.

  • Ventilation. OSHA Safety and Health Topics Page.
Exposure Evaluation

The following references provide links to indices of sampling and analytical methods used to evaluate exposures in the workplace.
  • Chemical Sampling Information (CSI). OSHA. Presents, in concise form, data on a large number of chemical substances that may be encountered in industrial hygiene investigations.
  • NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods (NMAM). US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Publication No. 94-113, (1994, August). Provides individual analytical methods, listed by chemical name or method number.
  • Dermal Exposure. OSHA Safety and Health Topics Page.
